Teachers In The Land of The Rising Sun

Let's look at our fellow teachers in Japan. What are they facing in their job as teachers. What are their ups and downs over there.

In general teachers in Japan are:-

1. generally well paid, supported and respected.
2. required to go through extensive training and have to pass a very competitive test. Only a few do pass to be qualified teachers.
3. required to attend classes in the summer and after school.
4. held in very high esteem.
5. making more money than equivalent positions in the private sector and the civil service.
6. treated with more respect and addressed with the honorific "sensei" a term that is usually used in addressing doctors or MPs.
7. required to work an average of 11 hours a day and received ¥410,000 a month salary.
8. more organized and likely to stick to the tasks and matter at hand with few or no personal stories or jokes.
9.stress and experience anxiety related to their work. New rules and regulations gave them too much of extra work. They are required to work an average of 80 hours of overtime per month.
10. stress due to inability to use strict, disciplining measures, complaints from parents, demands by the Education Ministry, time spent at endless meetings and training sessions, inability to change, and problems at home.
10. victims of violence coming from students and parents.
11. found to be incompetent by the Ministry of Education ( 500-600 of 900k teachers)in 2006. 103 resign voluntarily, 2 transferred to a clerical job and 6 were discharged.
12. suffering from teacher burnout, neurotic, in a state of total disorder, exhausted mentally and physically
13. taking sick leave because of depression. 39% (50 years old), 35% (40 years old), 19% (30 years old). 44% in the primary school and 46% in the secondary school.
14. found that many of the teachers that have checked into a hospital had problems related to trouble with parents.
15. pushed to the limit by pushy, demanding “monster” parents who demand that their child be excused from doing cleaning duties in their classrooms, teachers giving questions of higher level, their child are not protected from injuries in school, and many other reasons.

Just imangine the problems faced by teachers in Japan.
