Techniques of Effective Questioning

Questioning is part of teaching and learning. The types of questions and the way they are being ask will determine the level of understanding the students have attained. Questioning can arouse curiosity and stimulates interest in the topics introduced. Questioning can also clarify concepts and emphasise key points in the lesson taught. To enhance students problems solving ability and to encourage them to think at higher cognitive level effective questioning is important.Through questioning teachers are able to motivate students to search new information and also helps teachers to ascertain students' knowledge level. In order to achieve these, a teacher must be able to carry out effective questioning. Lets look at some of the techniques of effective questioning.

1. Establish an appropriate environment. Only certain questions should be posed.
2. Create a climate conducive to learning. Pose question in a non-threatening way. A hush tone when interupting a students response should be avoided.
3. Prepare students for the questioning session by explaining to them the format, expectations and how the knowledge will help them.
4. Use both pre-planned and emerging questions. Pre-planned questions are asked during introduction of a new concept. Emerging questions are asked during discussion sessions and should be asked at appropriate time during discussion.
5. Use an appropriate variety and mix of questions. Star with convergent questions and moving up to divergent ones. Begin with questions of a lower thinking skills and then work up to a higher level.
6. Avoid TRICK QUESTIONS or ones that only requires a YES or NO answer.
7. Phrase the questions carefully, concisely and clearly. Improper phrasing and the use of multiple questions related to the same topics may cause confusion.
