Teachers: Yesterday and Today

Teachers of yesterday are very commited to their job. Teaching is their blood, sweat and tears. Their will to teach is very high. They love their pupils. A teacher knows each each and everyone of his pupils. He even knows who the pupils parents are, what are they working as and where they are staying. Pupils are being called by name. Everytime a teacher call his pupil, he'll call him by his name. Most teachers of today treat their job as a part time job. Most of them goes to school, enters a class, began teaching, in fact talking to themselves and at times raise their voice in authority trying to make everyone sit still and listen to them. Tution classes is their main objective. I once remembered a teacher once asked me whether I did sent my son to a tution class since he is weak in Mathematics. Annoyed by her question, I asked her why must my son go to a tution class. What is the Mathematics teacher doing in his class. Does he just teach those who are proficient in her subject? What about the weak pupils? Teachers of yesterday would have grouped all those who are weak so that he or she can give extra attention to these pupils. They would never leave the weak ones all by themselves.

Preparing a lesson is a tedious job, but it is a job well done by teachers of yesterday. They would spend hours of their time preparing their lesson plan as well as their teaching aids. You will never see a teacher of yesterday entering a class without any teaching aid in their hands. Lessons taught by these teachers are very interesting and it makes the pupils enjoy learning. Learning was fun then. It is not so now. You can see teachers entering a class carrying the text book or any other books. Some may read from the books while teaching. They are even not sure what is to be taught. Frequently you hear a teacher asking their pupils where did he or she stopped yesterday. Pupils will have to sit still and listen to what he or she is reading. There are no activities in class. Pupils are not allowed to explore their skills and capabilities. It is sometime even worse when a teacher asked a pupil to copy down notes on to the blackboard so that the others would be able to copy the notes into their note books.

Today, lots of latest equipments are being supplied to schools. Laptops, teaching aids such as CDs, charts and workbooks and even LCDs are fixed in almost all classrooms. These are not being used to the utmost and to the fullest. Most of the laptops becomes the teachers personal item. It is seldom being used as teaching aids in the classrooms. Millions of ringgit is wasted. If classes are interesting and challenging I am sure going to school is a must to most pupils. The rate of absentism would be less. Truancy is also not something common. The number of pupils not being able to read and write would also be less then 5%. Mastering the 3R skills is the main objective in the first 3 years of Primary Education. Teachers teaching in the Lower Primary should make mastering the 3R skills their main objective in teaching.

I believe that the attitude of teachers towards their job should be corrected and revived in order to have an excellent education system. Dedicated and hardworking teachers who really knows what their missions are in education would make learning easy and interesting. To those who are dedicated and hardworking, keep up your work. Do and give the very best to your pupils. Your deeds will be remember forever. I pray to ALLAH that you will be given happiness, joy and riches forever.
